Privacy Policy – Just Highlighter

This Privacy Policy explains how Just Highlighter ("the Extension", "we", "our", or "us") handles information when you use our Chrome browser extension.

We designed Just Highlighter with privacy in mind. The Extension is a utility that lets you highlight text on any webpage and have those highlights persist across page reloads and your devices — it does not require user accounts. We do not collect analytics, crash reports, or any personal information. Your highlight data is stored exclusively through Chrome's built-in sync storage and never sent to our servers.

1. Information We Collect

We collect no personal information and operate no servers that receive your data.

• No accounts or profiles are created
• No personal identifiers (name, email, IP address, etc.) are collected
• No analytics or usage statistics are collected
• No crash or error reports are sent anywhere
• Highlight data: When you highlight text on a webpage, the Extension saves the following to Chrome's storage.sync API:
  • The highlighted text
  • Up to 40 characters of surrounding context (before and after the highlight) used to re-locate the highlight after page reloads
  • The highlight color (hex value)
  • A unique identifier for the highlight (timestamp + random string)
  This data is stored per webpage (keyed by the page's origin and path) and is never transmitted to our servers. It is synced across your own devices via your Google account through Chrome's built-in sync mechanism.
• Color preference: Your currently selected highlight color is saved to Chrome's storage.sync API so it persists between browser sessions. No personal information is associated with this value.

2. How Your Data Is Used

Your information is used as follows:

• Highlight data: Used solely to restore your highlights when you revisit a webpage
• Color preference: Used solely to remember your last selected highlight color
• Data is not sold or used for advertising
• Data is not used for cross-site or cross-app tracking
• Data is not shared with any third party

3. Data Storage and Security

All highlight data and preferences are stored exclusively via Chrome's storage.sync API. This is a built-in browser mechanism that saves data locally on your device and, if you are signed in to Chrome, syncs it across your devices through your Google account.

We operate no servers and have no access to your highlight data. Data synced through Chrome is governed by Google's Privacy Policy.

4. Third-Party Services

Just Highlighter does not integrate with any third-party service other than the browser platform itself.

The only external data pathway is:

• Google Chrome Sync – If you are signed in to Chrome, your highlight data and color preference are synced across your devices via your Google account. (Google Privacy Policy)

Just Highlighter does not integrate with:

• Analytics or telemetry services
• Crash reporting services
• Advertising networks
• Social media platforms
• Third-party data brokers
• Any external API or server

5. Children's Privacy

Just Highlighter does not knowingly collect personal data from users of any age. We collect no names, email addresses, or any other identifying information from anyone. The Extension complies with children's privacy regulations, including COPPA.

6. Your Privacy Rights

Because we collect no personal identifiers and operate no servers, most traditional data-subject requests (access, portability, correction) do not apply — there is simply no personal data on our end to provide or correct.

To manage or delete your highlight data:

• Delete highlights on a page: Use the Clear All button in the Highlights Panel on that page — this removes all highlights for the current page from Chrome sync storage immediately.
• Manage all highlights: Open the Highlights History page from the extension popup to view, export, or delete highlights across all sites. You can clear highlights per site or remove everything at once. Export saves your data as a local JSON file — nothing is transmitted externally.
• Delete all data: Uninstalling the Extension removes all locally stored data. To also remove data synced through Google, clear your Chrome sync data via Chrome Settings → You and Google → Sync and Google services → Manage what you sync.

7. Changes to This Privacy Policy

If the Extension's functionality changes in a way that affects privacy (for example, adding analytics, accounts, or new data collection), this Privacy Policy will be updated accordingly.
